THE SPEAKEASY
The competition asked that we re-design an existing Nantucket historic building, bringing it into modern times. The building chosen was The Oldest House, built in 1686 for Jethro and Mary Coffin. Our 2022 design concept was to create Jethro’s Bait & Tackle shop at the front entrance, which opens into a secret speakeasy called Mary’s Bar. Keeping with a nautical theme, the intimate space is highlighted with an ocean-view mural wallpaper, comfortable lounging furniture, and sea-worthy light fixtures. This entry won the Nantucket by Design student competition, and was displayed during the design week at The Whaling Museum, sponsored by the Nantucket Historical Association.
